A Little Background...

Since the 1940s, landscape managers have relied on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides to artificially feed and protect their plantings. Research studies show these products kill naturally occurring soil organisms and destroy the balanced soil ecology that has existed since the beginning of time.

While planting thousands of trees each year throughout Northern Virginia, we observed very little biological activity in many landscape soils. Earthworms, beetles, slugs, and other beneficial organisms were largely absent.

A Recipe for Killing Soil...

Many landscapes have been stripped of topsoil and organic material during grading, then subjected to repeated applications of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. These products kill remaining soil organisms and add salts to the soil. Excess nitrogen forces surviving microbes to consume the remaining carbon and humus, eventually leaving the soil biologically depleted.

Chemical applications also eliminate beneficial insects, allowing destructive insects to multiply rapidly without natural predators.
